Origin Story & Evolution

Echizen's cutlery industry dates back to 1337, when Chiyozuru Kuniyasu, a renowned swordsmith from Kyoto, moved to the region searching for pure water. While making swords, he forged sickles for local farmers, igniting the local craft. Echizen lacquerware lacquer-harvesters traveled Japan selling their lacquer and carried Echizen blades as trading items, making them famous nationwide. In 1979, Echizen became the first cutlery-producing area in Japan to be designated a national Traditional Craft.

Key Forging Techniques

Ni-mai-hiroge (Two-sheet spreading)

Stacking two blade blanks together and hammering them simultaneously. This halves cooling speed, ensuring uniform thickness and preventing warping, making blades incredibly thin.

Muro-reki (Wood clay furnace annealing)

Slowly cooling forged steel in wood-clay chambers to homogenize structure.
