Origin Story & Evolution

With over 600 years of blacksmithing history, Sakai's metalworking traces back to the 5th-century construction of the Nintoku Emperor Tomb. In the 16th century, Portuguese traders introduced tobacco, leading to shogunate-licensed tobacco cutters ('Sakai-Kiwami'). Transitioning to kitchen knives in the Meiji era, Sakai developed an artisanal division of labor (blacksmith, sharpener, handle-fitter, wholesaler). While representing ~9% of total national knife shipments (2023 Economic Census), it accounts for approximately 90% of the hand-forged traditional knives chosen by Japan's professional chefs.
