Origin Story & Evolution

Shinshu Forged Cutlery in Nagano Prefecture began during the late Sengoku period (around the 1500s) during the Battles of Kawanakajima, when swordsmiths accompanying the warlord Takeda Shingen settled in the region and taught their metalworking skills to local farmers. The region became known for its 'Shinshu Kama' (sickles), which are light, thin, and sharp. Shinshu cutlery was designated a National Traditional Craft of Japan in 1982.

Key Forging Techniques

Laminated Shear Forge

Joining a paper-thin layer of high-grade Yasuki steel directly to a resilient soft steel backing.

Free Forging (Hizuri)

Hammering out sickle blades entirely by hand-eye coordination without any molds to achieve extreme thinness.
